The day was the 19th of July, and things were hectic. Jordan was in a deep slumber, and unable to wake up, until a young Tootle appeared, and woke the Wolfe. Jordan found out that instead of flying at 5:00 am like scheduled, we would be driving to the Atlanta airport to catch our 9:00 am flight later that morning. The boys packed our bags, and after a quick stop to the Compassion Christian ‘Ham campus, we were on our way to Atlanta. Jefe, our trustworthy co-leader, drove the extremely reliable minivan for 4 hours, starting at 1:00 am. The boys arrived at the airport at around 5:00 am, and we walked around the airport. On minimal sleep, we were prepared to hop on our flight, but come to find out, it was delayed, nice. We finally boarded our plane at approximately 11:20 am, and our spirits were still high. The boys enjoyed some movies, and after almost 3 hours, we landed down in the beautiful country of Honduras.
We met Jeremy and his son, Alek, and they drove us to the community of Travesia. As we pulled up to the academy, we saw a beautiful soccer pitch, an academy building, two houses, and a shack. These buildings were enclosed in a gate, with barbed wire wrapped over the top of the fence. In the backyard, there was a beach access, parrots, and chickens. The energy within the fence was different than the outside village. In the village, there’s a sense of pain and struggle, but inside the fence, it feels secure and almost home-like. It was obvious from the start that the young boys and men of the community need a place like this to become strong leaders and men, because there is a huge absence of that in the village. As we walked into through the gate, we met the rest of the crew – Maria, Jackson, Jason, and Axel. After a quick meeting, instead of catching up on sleep, the young Americans and Axel played soccer for a few hours. Following that, Maria made us some chicken pot pie, and the missionaries told us their stories, and their mission. It was time for bed, and the Americans crashed hard after a long day of travel and fun!
