Yesterday was a eye-opening day which began by having a wonderful breakfast. After that we visited the town of Magdelana to see the adult soccer team play. Wow, what an exciting game as they won 2-1. After the game we were able to visit a few of the homes of some of the local families in Magdelana and San Migel. The local missionary Chris Steed (friends of the Johnson & Davis family), who started Operation 12 x 12 six years ago, took us around to some of the people he knew and the homes he has helped build, bringing Christ to this community.
One of the homes we visited, that had not had a new home built for them, was a family of three. Their home is literally a 4 x 6 metal tin shack for a father, mother and small baby. They live in this home which stays wet pretty much 24/7. The 12 x 12 ministry is hoping to take on the task of building them a new home. What was interesting from talking with Chris is that this couple was not married yet and one of the requirements of the 12 x 12 ministry for a home to be built is that couples must be married before the task is undertaken.
We also visited a home that was built and given to a humble family which consisted of father, mother and three daughters. The most astonishing thing I heard so far was when the father of this family said he was so lucky and happy to have just begun a job. This job is to cut firewood and carry it on his back to another town an hour away. My entire group was shocked and humbled that he thought that was such a gift. It was amazing to see and hear and definitely life changing for us.
When we returned to the team house we had dinner with the Johnson family, followed by worship. We sang songs and then debriefed what we had seen from the day. We ended the evening by reading a few of the supportive letters given to us by our SCC family. Our entire team are so grateful to be here doing what God wants us to do. We hope to learn and have a new perspective on our faith and what God plans are for us. Brock, Paul and their families are on God’s mission and are doing an incredible job making a difference in these boys’ lives and the community as well. Please pray for them and the boys, as well as the community of Guatemala.
